What’s in a word/phrase?
I love the way the Cypriots translate some of the English phrases and meanings. I had to laugh at two today: ringing to pay our holiday rental villa mobile phone villa by credit card over the phone, I was asked by the lovely operator for the long number on the front, then the expiry date, then she asked me “and what is the number on your backside?”………………………………………Well, erm, 666 but I’m on a diet and it used to be 6,666,666…………………………….
It that wasn’t funny enough, when I called to a registraton office to sort out registering a lady who will work at one of our villas, the lady I had to see was giggling: her Cypriot boss (this lady is English), was out of the office and had just telephoned her to ask her if her (the boss) Mother was ‘interfering in the business’, which she has a tendency to do when the boss is out.
The boss had asked:
“is my mother there?” Yes, the lady in the office replied nicely. “is she asking questions”, “Yes” came the reply through gritted teeth. “Is she between your legs”…………………………………oh, how we laughed…………………
