Hidden treasures

The narrow back streets in Chania, Crete, set around the harbour are really pretty and filled with many treasures. They remind me of the old streets of Paphos; ones hidden away behind the indoor and old town market, where the older Cypriot men still ‘practise their art’ making wooden chairs by hand and wrought iron gates….. they are lovely to wander around . (Photo below).

Speaking of hidden treasures, I stopped at the chemist in Peyia early yesterday to get Tonys tablets and, as I came out of the door, an older Cypriot man took my hand and with his other hand, began to go inside his shirt towards the belt of his trousers: worried about what was about to happen, I flinched but he pulled out a bunch of basil and handed it to me!

Where else does a man keep his basil but in his trouser belt? I know its good to keep flies away but really? Certainly one treasure which could have stayed hidden though I realise his gesture was a sincere one, bless him!
